Change of Heart...
No comic this week sadly. Job hunting has consumed Bryan's soul it seems. It happens, I can testify to that.
In more exciting news, I've come around to the new generation of Pokemon. Playing through Pokemon Black has taught me that there are actually a fair amount of cool 'mons to make up for the piles of garbage (yes, there are literally two garbage pokemon). The biggest problem is that a lot of the 'mons and elements of the game itself are derivative of previous iterations. Using the two poison-type garbage pokemon as examples, how are they different from Grimer/Muk? Yeah sure they have different moves, but what do they add to the Pokemon race? They are just two more pollution-themed pokemon. There are a lot of different bird pokemon, but for the most part they are all based on different types of birds (e.g., seagulls, pigeons, sparrows, ducks, pheasants). Yes, there is one basic bird-type found at the beginning of every game, but that's part of the derivation I'm talking about.
Pokemon games are formulaic, and let's face it, it's an awesome formula. However, they're running out of ways to mix up the different types into eight different gyms. B/W's spin is that each gym has a fun way of moving you around as you advance towards the gym leader. Works alright and shows off the 3Dness just fine. But it's just not enough. Hopefully if Game Freak wants to stick with the "new world each game with eight new gyms" then they'll use the 3DS's horsepower to come up with: 1) Sprites that aren't fucking pixellated (unrelated but I HATE it!) and 2) Some more creative and challenging pokemon battles! Seriously! Mono-type pokemon teams haven't been challenging since R/B when you picked Charmander and had to use him against Brock!
In the end though what we all want is for Pokemon to thrill us like it used to. We're all just searching for our own Shiny Ponyta, wherever it may be...

So why do we celebrate the expulsion of snakes from Ireland by drinking pints? Shouldn't we be eating boa constrictors or something?

Back from an exhausting PAX! And before anyone says "OMG! Penny Arcade's strip is about a man Chun-li," I looked at their picture, and it was a different guy dressed up as Chun-li. That's right, there were TWO Man-lis at PAX. Doesn't everyone feel like they missed out now? =P
